In a stunning homecoming that has Sooners fans buzzing with excitement, former Oklahoma softball icon Sydney Romero has officially purchased shares in the OU softball program. The move not only cements Romero’s status as a legend in Norman but also represents a bold new chapter in alumni-athlete involvement in collegiate athletics. After carving out a standout career in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL), Romero is now turning her attention—and investment—back to where it all began.

“Norman’s Where My Heart Is”

During a press conference held at Love’s Field on Wednesday morning, Romero was greeted with cheers from current players, alumni, and fans as she announced her investment in the program. “Norman’s where my heart is,” she said with a smile. “This program made me who I am—on and off the field. It’s time for me to help ensure future generations have the same opportunity I did.”

Romero, who starred at Oklahoma from 2016–2019, helped lead the Sooners to two national championships and four Women’s College World Series appearances. Known for her elite hitting, clutch play, and fearless leadership, she remains one of the most beloved players in OU softball history. Since graduating, she has become one of the faces of the AUSL, consistently ranking among its top performers.

A New Kind of Stakeholder

Romero’s purchase of equity in the OU softball program follows a growing trend of former athletes taking ownership and leadership roles in collegiate sports through NIL-era financial partnerships.
