In a remarkable and heartwarming act of selflessness, Texas A&M running back Rueben Owens has donated his entire $7.5 million signing bonus and sponsorship earnings to a network of charities and homeless relief organizations across the United States. At just 20 years old, Owens has proven that leadership goes beyond the football field — it’s about compassion, character, and giving back.
“There are millions of people struggling every day,” Owens said during an emotional press conference in College Station. “Families without homes, children without food, and veterans without proper care. I’ve been blessed with opportunities, and this is my way of sharing those blessings.”
The donation, which ranks among the largest ever made by a college athlete during the NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) era, will support national organizations such as Feeding America, Habitat for Humanity, and Operation Homefront, as well as local Texas-based shelters and youth outreach programs in cities like Houston, Dallas, and Bryan-College Station.
Owens’ philanthropic commitment is part of a larger initiative he’s calling the “Second Chance Project,” focused on building shelters, providing meals, and offering education and job training to underserved communities. The program will also establish after-school programs and mentorship opportunities for homeless and at-risk youth.
“I want kids who are growing up without stability to know they’re not forgotten,” Owens explained. “Even one act of kindness can change someone’s life. I’m just doing what I can.”
The reaction across the college football world has been swift and emotional. Teammates, coaches, fans, and former players have taken to social media to applaud Owens’ generosity, calling it “inspiring,” “legendary,” and “a true example of what it means to be an Aggie.”
Texas A&M Head Coach Mike Elko praised Owens, saying, “Rueben’s heart is as big as his talent. He’s an incredible player, but even more impressive as a young man. This is who we want representing Texas A&M.”
Athletic Director Ross Bjork echoed the sentiment: “This donation shows that NIL isn’t just about profit — it can be a force for positive change. Rueben is setting a new standard.”
