NASCAR legend Richard Petty, affectionately known around the racing world as “The King,” has spoken candidly about his growing discomfort with the recent direction of Legacy Motor Club, the team that once carried his iconic legacy. In a rare and heartfelt statement, Petty opened up about feeling sidelined from the organization he helped build, following the arrival of Jimmie Johnson as co-owner in 2022.
Petty, a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and one of the most revered figures in motorsports history, didn’t mince words when reflecting on the team’s transition.
“It’s not the same team anymore,” he said. “Legacy Motor Club was built on tradition, on family, on something personal. Lately, I feel like that spirit’s been pushed aside.”
Since Johnson — himself a seven-time Cup champion — acquired a stake in the organization, the team has undergone significant restructuring, rebranding, and changes in strategic direction. While Johnson’s leadership has brought fresh energy and a modernized approach, Petty’s influence within the day-to-day operations has noticeably waned.
“I don’t want to knock anybody,” Petty continued, “but when you’ve been part of something for your entire life, and then you suddenly find yourself on the outside looking in… it hurts. I always wanted the best for this team. I just wish the heart of it hadn’t changed.”
Legacy Motor Club, formerly Petty GMS Motorsports, rebranded in late 2022 with big ambitions and high expectations. Johnson’s involvement was heralded as a new chapter for the team — one that could combine his championship pedigree with Petty’s storied past. But the balance between honoring history and pushing toward the future seems to have shifted more heavily toward the latter.
Petty’s comments have sparked conversation across the NASCAR community, with many fans echoing his sentiments and calling for the organization to better acknowledge the roots from which it grew.
While Petty emphasized he holds no personal ill will toward Johnson or the current leadership, it’s clear he feels the team has drifted away from the values and identity that made it special.
“I still love NASCAR. I still love the fans. And I’ll always love this team. But Legacy isn’t just about moving forward — it’s about remembering where we came from.”
As the 2025 season unfolds, Legacy Motor Club finds itself in the spotlight not just for its performance on the track, but for how it navigates the delicate balance between honoring its legendary past and chasing a bold new future.
