Ohio State Lands 5-Star RB Derrek Cooper for 2026 Class
In a major coup for Ohio State, 5-star running back Derrek Cooper, ranked as the No. 3 RB and No. 23 overall prospect in the 2026 class by On3, has committed to the Buckeyes. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound dynamo from Chaminade-Madonna (Fla.) brings blazing speed, elite vision, and bruising power, making him a cornerstone for OSU’s future backfield. Cooper, a former teammate of Buckeye star Jeremiah Smith, announced his pledge after a standout recruitment process.
Cooper’s journey saw him initially commit to Georgia in June 2024, only to reopen his recruitment days later. Ohio State, Miami, Alabama, Auburn, and Texas A&M emerged as frontrunners, with OSU’s persistent efforts paying off. Visits to Columbus, including the Purdue game in November 2024 and the spring game in April 2025, showcased the Buckeyes’ vision for him under RB coach Carlos Locklyn. Cooper’s versatility—he can also play secondary—and his Under Armour Future 50 performance sealed his status as a priority target.

Ohio State’s 2026 class, already elite, includes 5-star WR Chris Henry Jr. (No. 1 overall), 4-star TE Corbyn Fordham, and 4-star DB Jakob Weatherspoon. The Buckeyes are also pursuing 5-star LB Tyler Atkinson and 4-star RB Savion Hiter, both top-25 prospects, as they aim for a top-five class. With Cooper’s commitment, OSU solidifies its reputation for landing game-changing talent, setting the stage for a dominant future.
