A towering figure in the history of our beloved club, Battle’s contributions as both a player and coach have left an indelible mark on the program.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Battle played under the legendary coach Bear Bryant from 1960 to 1962, contributing to the team’s national championship in 1961. He later returned to the University of Alabama as the athletic director from 2013 to 2017, overseeing significant developments in the athletics department.
Battle’s coaching career was equally distinguished. He served as the head coach at the University of Tennessee from 1970 to 1976, leading the Volunteers to a 59–22–2 record. His tenure included five bowl appearances and a top-ten national ranking.
Beyond the field, Battle was a visionary entrepreneur. He founded The Collegiate Licensing Company, revolutionizing the way collegiate trademarks and logos were managed and marketed. His innovative approach provided universities with a new revenue stream and set industry standards.
