Born in Clinton, South Carolina, Long made history with the Gamecocks by becoming the first player in program history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season in 1975. During his time with the Gamecocks, he accumulated 2,372 rushing yards, ranking him 10th all-time in school history. Long’s legacy extended beyond college football. He was drafted by the New York Jets in the seventh round of the 1977 NFL Draft, fulfilling his dream of playing professional football. In five seasons with the Jets, he amassed 2,190 rushing yards and 28 total touchdowns. His best season came in 1978, where he rushed for 914 yards and 10 touchdowns.
