Morikawa Collin Content To Top The “Fake” Tour Championship Leaderboard Following FedEx Cup Runner-Up Position.

 

Collin Morikawa finished second to Scottie Scheffler in the final round of an event not once throughout the PGA Tour season, but this time the World No. 1 won handily at the Tour Championship to win his first FedEx Cup.

Nevertheless, Morikawa, who finished second to Scheffler at the Memorial Tournament as well, might find solace in the fact that, as a result of his performance at East Lake, he topped the Official World Golf Ranking leaderboard for the competition.

 

The reason for this is the Tour Championship’s scoring system, which saw Scheffler start the round two shots ahead of Morikawa and finish six strokes behind.

Morikawa ultimately finished four shots behind Scheffler in his quest for the FedEx Cup victory, but throughout the course of the four rounds, he outperformed him by two strokes, with Sahith Theegala finishing just one shot behind Morikawa.

The two-time Major winner said afterward that he was looking for the bright side of things by realizing that he would have won the competition even if he hadn’t made a mistake in his initial strokes.

“I have to start performing better in the closing stages. That’s the crux of the matter,” he said. “I didn’t have to perform very well in a few of those rounds. Not that I needed to shoot 63 to win, or anything.

“I was in these final groups—I’m not sure how many there were this year—but I was in enough to be able to quickly recall a handful, and when you can do that, you hope to think of the victories.
