MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES MANAGEMENT MOURNS THE TRAGIC PASSING OF “GILBERT JAY ARENAS JR.” AT AGE 43

Memphis, TN — The Memphis Grizzlies organization is deeply saddened to announce the passing of beloved community figure and honorary team ambassador, Gilbert Jay Arenas Jr., who died yesterday at the age of 76 following a tragic accident.

Arenas, affectionately known as “Gil Jr.” around the FedExForum, was a lifelong Memphian whose unwavering support for the Grizzlies spanned decades. Though not to be confused with the former NBA star, he shared the same name and an equally boundless passion for basketball. His presence at nearly every home game—from debut season reunions to playoff thrills—became a cherished fixture of Grizzlies lore.

Born in 1948, Arenas dedicated his life to youth development and community empowerment. As founder of the Memphis Hoop Dreams Foundation, he mentored countless young athletes through after-school programs and summer camps. His tireless efforts earned him the 2005 Community Hero Award from the city and, most recently, an honorary Grizzlies jersey in 2023—number 76, marking his birth year and a testament to what he meant to the franchise.

Grizzlies President Jason Price shared heartfelt words at a press gathering:

“Gil Jr. was more than a fan—he was family. His legacy of kindness, mentorship, and unwavering devotion to this team is woven into the very fabric of our city. We are heartbroken, and Memphis will never forget him.”

Arenas was retired but remained active—coaching kids, attending charity events, and hosting weekly radio shows reflecting on Memphis basketball history. His sudden death, the result of a catastrophic fall from scaffolding while fundraising at a local rec center, has struck a chord across the region.

Teammates past and present also weighed in. Coach Taylor Jenkins recalled, “He was there, front row, whenever I needed a voice of encouragement. A true legend in Grizzlies blue.”
