According to the Huntersville Police Department, the incident occurred around 9:15 a.m. when Hattori’s 2025 Toyota Crown, traveling westbound on NC Highway 73, crossed the centerline and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle. Hattori was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the other vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Born in Okayama, Japan, Hattori moved to the United States in the 1990s to pursue a career in motorsports. He competed in various racing series, including the Indy Lights, CART, and the Indy Racing League, making two starts in the Indianapolis 500. Transitioning to NASCAR, Hattori founded Hattori Racing Enterprises (HRE) in 2008. Under his leadership, HRE achieved significant success, notably clinching the NASCAR Truck Series championship in 2018 with driver Brett Moffitt.
